SUMMARY:WFI AGM\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to our AGM\, which this year will take place online\, on Saturday 25th November\, from 10am till 1pm.   \nWe’re using the medium of zoom\, to allow as many women as possible to attend from across the country\, with as little financial and time cost as possible. The zoom invitation will be sent to you a few days before the AGM\, once your ticket order (below) has been ratified. \nAgenda \nThe main theme of the day will be to consider Women for Independence’s response and engagement with the proposed Constitutional Convention and nationwide consultation\, if the SNP win the next General Election. \nWe also need your input to drive our plans for next year. We are delighted that many local WFI groups have continued to be active in the last 12 months\, both in terms of engaging with women and in arranging events and speakers. During this AGM\, we’d love to hear from all of you\, to decide what you would like our priorities to be for actions\, campaigns and events in the next year\, including National Councils. We want to make the biggest impact possible\, with the resources available to us. \nThe more formal part of the morning will include minutes of the last AGM\, organisation and branch activity reports and our financial statement. But the AGM is also about catching up with old friends and meeting new ones – and\, of course\, our famous Open Mic sessions! \nAttendance at the AGM is open to all members\, and registrations will be ratified to make sure that your membership is up to date. You can also check your membership by logging into the members area of the website on www.wfi.scot\, or by emailing our National Coordinator at info@womenforindependence.org. As per our constitution\, only those attending the AGM have a vote on any resolutions or decisions taken on the day. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \n

SUMMARY:The International War on Women
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. SUBSCRIBERS HAVE BEEN CONTACTED AND ALL TICKET PURCHASES WILL BE REFUNDED. WE APOLOGISE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY CAUSE. \n  \nAbout the Event \nThe International War on Women affects the mortality\, freedom and life chances of millions of women around the world. There is no single root cause\, but a myriad of prejudice and legislation that hounds women through every country they live in as a refugee. \nIn war zones\, women are punished for their existence in targeted and coercive measures\, designed to humiliate\, control and subjugate. Once settled in a new country\, women refugees often find themselves unable to work because they have dependants\, or are left in precarious housing or open to exploitation by a system that fails to protect them. The situation is at crisis point\, but globally and at a national level\, we are not providing an adequate response. \n\nEvery two seconds\, another person is displaced.\n50% are women; just under 50% are under 18.\n30% of women refugees have suffered some form of torture.\nThe UN know\, admit and publish statistics that prove that refugee women are more affected by violence than any other women population in the world.\nGermany is the only EU country to make the top 10 list of countries taking most refugees.\nThe US has cut its refugee resettlement by 80% in the last 5 years.\nAbout 80% of all displaced peoples stay within their wider regional geography often literally moving to the country next door. Just over a third (30 million or so) cross international borders and so are deemed to be refugees.\n\nWhat can we do? \nJoin us for an afternoon lecture and discussion with WFI National Committee member Maggie Lennon\, who will take us through the growing global threat to women and girls’ wellbeing\, and what action should be taken on a national and international level. \n  \nTickets \nScroll down to buy tickets\, or to select a free one. We are a not-for-profit organisation and all monies raised will be used to fund our research and running costs\, as well as to subsidise free tickets\, which are available to women who need them\, for all our events. \nAlthough our events help us raise funds\, it’s just as important to us to provide an opportunity for women to get together and support each other. For this reason\, we always offer tickets at various prices.  It’s your decision how much you’d like to contribute. \n  \nTravel \nThis event will take place in Flemington House\, in Glasgow. See below for the address and a link to google maps. \nTo check bus routes\, click the link and enter your postcode: Bus Journey Planner – Greater Glasgow\n\nBy train\, from Glasgow Queen Street Station: Trains run from upper and lower levels – to check times / routes: \nTrain Journey Planner\n\n\nVenue Accessibility\n\nA small amount of blue badge spaces are available. If you need this\, please contact us ahead of the event\, to arrange access.

SUMMARY:AGM: Living Shouldn't Come At A Cost
DESCRIPTION:The WFI AGM will take place on Saturday 19th November\, at 10.30 am – 2.30 pm. \nThis year\, our AGM will focus on the cost of living crisis\, its impact on women and how this country could address the situation differently under independence. In solidarity with our Ukrainian sisters – and all women from countries in conflict – we will also look at the impact of war on women. \n  \nSpeakers \nOur National Committee members will be joined by: \nSue Lyons\, who will give our keynote speech on the cost of living crisis. Actively involved in the Highland third sector\, Sue is an activist\, a PhD student researching poverty and a political blogger. Any of you who have read Sue’s blogs will know that she is a passionate advocate for the disadvantaged in our society and has robust views on the political changes needed to make this a fairer country for everyone. \nDr Angela O’Hagan of the Scottish Women’s Budget Group will be speaking to us on the cost of living crisis. Angela literally wrote the book on gender budgeting in Scotland and has a wide-ranging experience of working and lecturing in equalities and public policy. She’s a brilliant speaker and manages to communicate complex ideas with humour and compassion. \nOhla Maksochka will join the discussion panel in our section on War and Women. Before the war\, Ohla was a regional leader in Ukraine’s leading feminist organisation. Now based in Scotland\, she will contribute her views of the war in Ukraine\, from a feminist perspective. \nJoin in\, bring a friend\, catch up and make your voice heard!

SUMMARY:National Council: Abortion is Healthcare.
DESCRIPTION:Abortion is an offence under common law in Scotland; the Abortion Act 1967 (as amended) applies in Scotland and refers to “any rule of law relating to the procurement of abortion”. \nAn offence? To have bodily autonomy and to ensure we are free to make the right choices for our lives? Why is abortion criminalised in Scotland? \n \nNational Council\nJoin us online or in person\, at our first live National Council since before Covid.  Let’s talk about Abortion Rights and what needs to change. \nIn addition to our main topic of abortion\, we’ll chat about WFI’s current plans and how you can get involved with fundraising for the referendum and advocating for Independence. \nOur hosts\, WFI Dumfries and Galloway\, will also present an evaluation of Equality Impact Assessments in their local authority. This is a great piece of activism that any of us can do in our own area\, so if you aren’t familiar with EIAs\, listen in and you may be able to make life better in your own region! \nFinally\, there will be an Open Mic session. \nThere will be a short break for refreshments and a chance for a blether. \nRemote access to the event will be available via a Zoom link\, which will be sent to you after registration. Hope to see you there\, however you connect!

SUMMARY:Stand Up\, Be Counted!
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:\n\nDue to a combination of Covid and campaigning\, we’ve had to postpone Saturday’s Stand Up\, Be Counted event. We’re replacing this event with an Open House zoom event\, hosted by Emma Walker from Change The Chat. This is a drop-in online event to come along and have a chat about local politics\, campaigning and intersectional feminism. Emma is on hand to talk about the partnership between Women For Indy and Change The Chat.\n\nThe room will be open from 10.30am – 11.30am\, so boil a brew and come along for a chat in a safe space. This event is open to members of Women For Indy and is a cross-party\, safe space event.\n\n\nWomen for Independence presents ‘Stand Up\, Be Counted!’\, in association with Change The Chat.\n\n\nAre you interested in doing politics differently?\nThis event is for women who are candidates for election in May 2022\,  or those who would like to support women candidates. Come along to share\, learn and network with others.\nWhatever party you are a member of\, you’re welcome here: we want to see more women in every area of the political arena. And cross-party support between women is a vital component in redressing the gender imbalance.\n\nIn this online event\, we will discuss:\nThe political landscape today and how it affects women\nWhy we need more women in office\nUsing your support network to survive in politics\n\nThere will be two breakout sessions where you will have the opportunity to work through some key topics and network with other candidates.\nThis event is FREE and open to all who identify as women. Scroll down to book your ticket.\nAbout your hosts.\nWomen for Independence | Independence for Women and Change The Chat are working in partnership to jointly campaign on shared issues and values. This is an important way of reaching  more women\, tackling misogyny and making Scotland a safer place for women. \n \nChange The Chat works across four main areas – public safety\, women’s health\, women in the workplace and women in politics – with the goal of making necessary changes through having different and often uncomfortable conversations. \nThe main focus of our partnership right now is Women in Politics; there are enough women in our organisations with lived experience of working in politics to know that systemic change is needed. If we can create a safe\, brave\, political system for more women to be elected within\, it will lead to the kind of policy change we want. We’re intersectional and our work is trauma-informed – there’s space for women to talk about their experiences and support others\, at ‘Speakeasy’ events. We’re also non-partisan and work across all parties and political beliefs.

SUMMARY:National Council 2nd Oct - Examining Scotland's National Care Service
DESCRIPTION:Women’s lives are disproportionately affected by caring responsibilities and engaging with services on behalf of their loved ones. \nWomen also make up the largest proportion of the care workforce\, which has traditionally been undervalued and underpaid. \nOur National Council on 2nd October will examine the Scottish Government’s consultation on the delivery of a National Care Service. Women for Independence will be submitting a response to the consultation\, based on the thoughts and opinions given at the event. \nThis is your opportunity to affect policy. Your views are crucial in shaping a National Care Service that works for women. \nThis online event will be split into two 1-hour sessions (with a break)\, during which attendees will be spilt into groups looking at the sections of the consultation. A WFI National Committee member will be there to guide you through. \nThe consultation document can be found here\, if you want to have a look beforehand. \nJoin us for this event – or become a member and be part of the movement. Women for Independence events and membership are open to all self-identifying women. \nTickets \nWe are a not-for-profit organisation and all monies raised will be used to fund our research and running costs\, as well as to subsidise free tickets\, which are available for all our events. \nAlthough our events help us raise funds\, it’s just as important to us to provide an opportunity for women to get together and support each other. For this reason\, we always offer tickets at various prices.  It’s your decision how much you’d like to contribute.

SUMMARY:National Council: Saturday\, 24th July. Women in Public Office
DESCRIPTION:We need more women in public life. We are sick of misogyny\, bullying and harassment in politics and society generally. If you are thinking about what you can do\, then this Women for Independence | Independence for Women National Council is for you!\nOur themes for the event are linked: encouraging more women into public life and particularly the local authority elections next year\, and also the rampant misogyny\, bullying and harassment that exist in politics and online generally that must be so off-putting to women\, which is exactly why we need more women to stand. \nAs WFI is not party- specific\, we are keen to be inclusive and learn from the experience of those outwith the independence movement too. \nWe are delighted to have the following speakers: \n\nTalat Yaqoob\, founder of Pass the Mic\nLorna Slater MSP\, Green Party and WFI member\nEmma Walker\, CEO of Change the Chat\nKat Cary of Reclaim the Streets\, Edinburgh.\n\nWomen in Local Elections\nIf you have submitted an application to be considered as a council elections candidate in 2022\, but are still swithering\, this event might be exactly what you need to firm your resolve to progress. Even if you are not\, you can be a part of the support network for those who are. \nWhat do you need? What campaign activity could help?  \nBe part of the solution with the WFI #Sisterhood \nAlthough WfI events are intended to raise funds\, it is just as important to us to provide an opportunity for women to get together\, support each other and enjoy themselves. For this reason\, it’s your decision how much you’d like to contribute for your ticket and as always free tickets are available for those who need them using the code WFIFREE. \nClick here to book a place on Eventbrite.  We can’t wait to see you there! \nJoin us for this event\, or become a member and be part of the movement. \nWomen for Independence events and membership are open to all self-identifying women. \nTICKETS\nAvailable from Eventbrite by donation. \nSuggested donation £6 to help us raise funds. Please donate whatever you feel able to\, however small (or large!)\, it will be very much appreciated. \n*To use the code if you need a free (unwaged) ticket: \n\nclick on the green ‘Tickets’ button\nclick on Enter promo code\nenter WFIFREE\nthe free (unwaged) ticket will become available
