WFI Spring 2026 Newsletter

Welcome to our newsletter! We know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from us. Rest assured we’re working hard in the background to get Women for Indy back up and running after the hiatus we‘ve had over the last year or two.

Believe In Scotland Rally – 28th March – Edinburgh

Women for independence will be at the Believe in Scotland ‘End London Rule’ March and Rally on the 28th of March, supporting women’s voices in claiming our right to decide our future and expressing our wish to live in an independent Scotland.

We are really looking forward to hearing the views of the First Minister and the co-leaders of the Green Party on how the election can change Scotland’s future; as well as the other speakers reminding us of Scotland’s incredible potential, which of course matters to women living in Scotland. Whether it’s our economy, immigration, health or education – all have been affected by Westminster’s disastrous policies.

Women’s voices were crucial in the referendum campaign and they are even more crucial now that our fight for self-determination is coupled with the challenge of the anti-progressive voices amongst us.   We are strongest when we support each other. So, look out for our banner (above), come and say hello or come and walk with us for as short or as long as you wish. We’d particularly love to see any of our members who are on the march.  

Join Our WhatsApp Group 

Holyrood Election Day of Action – Saturday 25th April, 11am-1pm, Edinburgh

 Please join us for our day of action in Edinburgh. We’ll meet at Castle Terrace where we’ll have a stall. If numbers allow, we’ll have a second stall at the Duke of Wellington statue on Princes Street.

We’ll be promoting a progressive pro-independence position and will chat to members of the public about the benefits of independence for all women and our inclusive feminist stance. At the same time we’ll be opposing right-wing populism and their racist rhetoric. Please let us know if you can join us by emailing info@womenforindependence.org. 

Your National Committee

 We elected a new National Committee at the AGM last May and have since been delighted to have more women join us. The current committee will serve until our AGM in 2027 and you can find out all about us on our website. We’re still small in number and are keen to recruit new members. If this is something you’d be interested in, please get in touch. No special experience required, just enthusiasm and a passion for our values.

Social Media Report

 We have decided to make social media one of our main priorities for 2026 as it is crucial to recruiting new people, especially young people, into WfI and the wider movement, as well as keeping current members up to date.

Over the next year, we aim to grow our following across our existing platforms – Instagram, Facebook, Threads and Bluesky and to establish ourselves on TikTok, which we have just recently joined.  It is important to us that we stay party-politically balanced so we make sure to reshare and feature all progressive pro-indy parties equally, including the SNP, Greens, SSP and Independents.

We see social media as a valuable recruiting tool for new members as it spreads awareness of who we are and what we do – we have already been approached by one new National Committee member this way. It is also important that we reach Gen Z voters as they are much more likely to support independence but also have high levels of disillusionment. We aim to encourage them to engage in politics – whether that be through voting for a progressive pro-indy party, going to a march, or joining us.

We are now just over a month into WfI’s new social media campaign, and it has been a resounding success. Social media is very much a game of trial and error but we have already had a lot of success, with over 100k cumulative views across Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook, 500 new followers and 3,000 likes. From our analytics we have found that the majority of our viewers are young people – over half of our viewers on TikTok and Instagram are under 35. Interestingly, while women do make up the majority of our audience, we do also have substantial male interest, making up around 40% of our viewers. Above is a breakdown of total views spread across platform.

We look forward to seeing what is next in store for us. The steps we have planned are branching out into new mediums of content, including Tiktok explainer videos and interviews with interesting women in our movement. We’ll make sure to film plenty of content at the Believe in Scotland march on the 28th – Hope to see you there!

WFI Networking Group

We’re setting up a new networking group and we’d love to have you be part of it. Read on for more info…

We will be holding networking group meetings, with representatives from the national committee and up to two representatives from each local WfI group, four times per year online. This is to better share information between ourselves and to see how we can best support each other to grow our collective membership and activity to previous levels and beyond, to further the cause of Independence, with women’s interests and voices at the heart of it. 

We want to make sure we include as many of you as possible, so if you are a member of a local WfI group, please get in touch to let us know up to date contact details for the group. If your group is now inactive but you would like to get it going again, no matter how small, please get in touch, we’d love to see you at the networking meeting too. If you’d like to start a new local WfI group, we can help you with that and would love to see you as well. Please email network@wfi.scot  

We look forward to seeing some of you at our first Zoom meeting on Thursday 2nd April at 7pm.

Future events 

We’d love to have you come along to one of our events! They’ll also be live-streamed for anyone unable to attend in person.

Our AGM is scheduled for Saturday 13th June in Edinburgh. We’re also planning a National Council in Perth in September.
